SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Madonna Crusaders Women's Basketball team traveled to Southfield, Mich. for their first conference game of the 2020 calendar year. They went up against the Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech University who were receiving votes in the most recent NAIA national poll. The Crusaders, which were never behind in the game, had a strong first quarter and an all around team game propelled the Crusaders to a 67-61 victory.
This is the first win for the Crusaders at Lawrence Tech since the 2013 season, in which the Crusaders won 60-43, and only the second win away in the series.
The Crusaders record improves to 3-13 and 1-7 in conference, while the Blue Devils record falls to 11-6 and 5-2 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Blue and Gold were able to dominate the first quarter with hot shooting from Victoria Guardiola who hit three 3-point baskets, two of which were in the first minute of the game. MU's strong defense was able to hold the Blue Devil offense to only 13 points in the quarter while outscoring them by six.. The Crusaders had a 17-6 run which opened up the game. Leading the Crusaders in the quarter was Guardiola.
- The second quarter was a back and forth match between the two teams. Neither team was able to make any sort of consecutive run as both offenses were running on all cylinders. The Crusaders had a five point lead going into halftime. Leading the Crusaders was Emily Pendred.
- Both teams got a couple quick baskets to start the second half. The defenses were able to settle down in the quarter as they were able to hold both teams to 14 points. More back and forth scoring as neither team was able to gain a lead in the quarter. Leading the Crusaders in the quarter was Megan Aho and Paige Boden.
- The fourth quarter saw Aho take control of the game as she scored 13 of the teams 19 points in the quarter. The Blue Devils were able to pull the lead to within two at the 6:35 mark, but baskets from Sydney Brown, Boden and Aho extended the lead back to the six point differential. Leading the Crusaders in the quarter was Aho.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- 3: The Junior transfer Aho had a career day for the Crusaders as she tallied up 22 points and nine rebounds which are both highs for her to go along with three steals.
- 46: The Crusaders finished with 46 rebounds including 14 offensive and 32 defensive rebounds, leading the Crusaders was Pendred with a career-high 15 rebounds. While the Blue Devils also recorded 38 rebounds including 10 offensive and 28 defensive and were led by Danielle Hanson with 8 rebounds.
- 41.3: The Blue and Gold shot at a 41.6% clip from the floor while the Blue Devils hit 34.4% of their shots.
- 14, 24: The Blue and Gold were crashing the boards and were able to put back multiple shots as they had 14 second chance points to go along with their 24 points inside the paint.

- The Crusaders will next travel to Dearborn, Mich. to go up against the Wolverines of University of MIchigan-Dearborn on Wednesday, Jan. 8 with a 5:30 tipoff.
