Second day of Keiser Invite unkind to @MUCrusadersVB

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Madonna University volleyball team wrapped up play at the Keiser University Invite on Saturday, with a pair of losses to College of Saint Mary (Neb.) and Dakota Wesleyan University. The Flames (3-1) won in four games in the first match of the day while the Tigers (4-0) defeated MU (2-2) 3-0.

Match 1 vs. CSM
  • The Crusaders fell behind early to CSM, 9-2, but the Blue and Gold used an 8-1 to cut the deficit to two, 14-12. Unfortunately, the Flames scored seven of the final eight points in the set for the 25-16 win.
  • In the second set, the teams traded the lead until an Erica LaBaere kill gave Madonna the 17-16 lead. Madonna won nine of the final 12 points after a 16-16 tie to even the match at 1.
  • The Blue and Gold never led in set three and could not overcome a 7-0 run midway through set four in the match loss.

Match 2 vs. DWU
  • The story of the match against the Tigers was the numerous mutli-point runs by Dakota Wesleyan. It began in set one with a 7-1 rally to start the match, a 4-0 run to begin set two and five straight points to finish the game and a nine-point run sealed the match in set four.
  • The offense struggled in the loss as the Blue and Gold hit .118 while the Tigers hit .400.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • 5  - Jodie Kelly did all she could for the Crusaders as she tallied 19 kills in match 1 and 16 in the nightcap while also adding 14 digs on the day
  • 10 – LaBaere tallied 10 kills in the first match against St. Mary
  • 34/24 – Betsy Cook dished out 34 assists against the Flames and added 24 against the Tigers
  • 19/11  - Olivia Sweeney led the defense with 19 digs against CSM and added 11 against DWU while Jamie Ciacico matched her 11 against the Tigers

Madonna travels back to Michigan to take part in the University of Michigan-Dearborn Early Bird Classic on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 23-24.
