GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – For the second consecutive season the Madonna University men's lacrosse team saw its season end at the hands of Reinhardt University in the NAIA National Invitational at the Aquinas College Soccer and Lacrosse Field. This time around, it's the Eagles who own the tournament's top seed and they defeated the eighth-seeded Crusaders 13-7 in the first round of the invitational after the two teams met in the title contest last season.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- A jump shot from Ryan Flaherty got the Crusaders on the board first, but the Waleska, Georgia program scored the next five goals before Anthony Salamone cut the deficit to three with one minute to play in the opening quarter.
- Ian Rush answered another RU tally with one of his own before the Eagles added four more for a 10-3 halftime lead.
- The Blue and Gold won the third period, 3-2, as Tyler Kilar tallied a pair of goals and Cole Gingell fed Harry Dyson for the third tally to make it a 12-6 contest. Each team added a fourth quarter goal with Dyson finding Salamone for the games final goal with 1:28 to play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- 17/41; 27/40: Madonna outshot Reinhardt 54-40 in the contest, but the Eagles made more of their opportunities as they put 27 shots on goal to the Crusaders' 17
- 14-10: Zachary Beam won 14-of-24 face offs for the Crusaders in the contest
- 14: Tyler Dohmeier made 14 saves in goal for Madonna
- 7: Beam finished with a team-best seven ground balls
- 6: Six different players, Salamone (2 g), Kilar (2 g), Dyson (1 g, 1 a), Flaherty (1 g), Rush (1 g) and Gingell (1 a), scored a point for the Blue and Gold
- 3: Salamone led the team with three caused turnovers
With back-to-back trips to the NAIA National Invitational Tournament and two seniors on the roster, the Crusaders, who are in their third season as a program, will look to make a return to the invitational in Savannah, Georgia next spring.
