Records: Madonna University (37-22), Tennessee Wesleyan University (50-9)

Location: Hunter Wright Stadium, Kingsport, Tenn.

KINGSPORT, Tenn.- The Madonna University Crusaders season came to an end on Wednesday afternoon at Hunter Wright Stadium as they were not able to complete an improbable comeback over No. 2 Tennessee Wesleyan. The Crusaders found themselves trailing 12-0 early in the ballgame and rallied for nine runs over the next six innings, falling just short by a score of 15-9. The Crusaders end the season with a record of 37-22 while the Bulldogs improve to 50-9 with a chance to advance to the NAIA World Series with two victories over Webber International (Fla.).

GAME 1: Madonna 9, Tennessee Wesleyan 15

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Bulldogs offense was hot early on, posting four runs in the first, one in the second, and seven in the fourth for a 12-0 lead

  • The Crusaders responded with a five-run bottom half of the fourth on three hits and four walks. Frankie Lucska and Nick Sykes were both walked before Jalen Thomas was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Gordon Ferguson stepped to the plate and doubled to deep right field, scoring Lucska and Sykes before Noah Renaud singled that scored Thomas. The hit parade continued as Noah Moore doubled to left-center field that scored both Ferguson and Renaud to make the score 12-5

  • MU would add three more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Lucska doubled to begin the inning before Ferguson sent another double to down the right field line. A single by Moore and a throwing error by the Bulldogs catcher plated two more runs for the Blue and Gold

  • TWU would add insurance runs in the sixth and eighth, extending the lead to 15-8 and the Crusaders would add one more run in the eighth but it would not be enough to advance

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?

  • MU posted 13 hits n the contest and the Bulldogs collected 15

  • Ferguson (3-for-5) and Lucska (3-for-4) both finished with three hits on the day while Adrian Reed (2-for-5) and Moore (2-for-4) also finished with multi-hit games

  • Ferguson and Moore both collected three RBI

  • Cole Rize entered the game as a pinch hitter and ripped a double down the left-field line in his final at bat in a Crusaders uniform

  • Greg Goodbred suffered the loss, lasting three innings and allowing nine runs on eight hits and three walks

  • Ryan Mount was first out of the pen, allowing three runs in 0.1 innings before Joe Wozniak and Ross Rickel strung together 2.2 shutdown innings

  • Jack Ferguson threw the final three innings, striking out four and allowing just one earned run
