Madisen Henry nearly pitched her way into the Madonna University softball record books as the duo led the Crusaders to a sweep of Indiana Tech, 7-0 and 6-4, at University Field on Sunday.
GAME 1: Madonna 7, Indiana Tech 0
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Henry took a no-hitter into the sixth when a leadoff bunt single put a runner on for the Warriors, but the Crusaders' ace worked out a jam to preserve the shutout
- Sarah Holton set the tone for the day with a leadoff triple in the bottom of the first to right field and scored promptly on a Jordan Johnson double to the left centerfield fence. Halee Warren added a second run with a single up the middle to score Johnson.
- A Brooklyn Dolloff sacrifice fly plated Kattie Popko in the third and the Blue and Gold broke things open in the sixth as Holton drove in a run then Popko cleared the bases with a 3-run double down the left field line for the 7-0 win
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?
- Henry (6-6) finished the day with two hits, three walks and eight strikeouts over seven shutout frames
- Holton and Popko paced the 14-hit attack with three hits each while the former scored twice and drove in a run and the latter scored once and drove in three
- Comerzan added two hits while Johnson scored twice and drove in a run
- Madonna tallied five extra-base hits in the contest
GAME 2: Madonna 6, Indiana Tech 4
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- A sacrifice bunt and a base hit plated a pair of unearned runs in the first for the Warriors
- Madonna drew even in the second as Robin Sprys singled home Amy Clegg and Emma Sikinia plated Dolloff
- Dolloff scored an unearned run in the fourth on a fielder's choice, but the Warriors quickly answered with an RBI double to even the score
- In the fifth, the Blue and Gold took the lead for good as Sprys again singled to bring home a run and Sikinia singled to right field to plated two
- Indiana Tech scored the final run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?
- Holton led the Crusaders with three hits while Comerzan, Dolloff and Sprys each had two hits
- Dolloff scored two runs while Sprys (2) and Sikina (3) combined for five of the Crusaders' six RBI
- Ciera Jones earned her 12th win as she allowed four runs, one earned, on six hits with five strikeouts in seven innings
- Madonna outhit Indiana Tech 12-6 in the contest
