LIVONIA, Mich. - The Madonna University softball team received a pair of gems from the circle and the offense provided timely hits as the Crusaders swept Cleary University in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader 3-2 and 4-2 at University Field at The MAC on Saturday.
GAME 1: Madonna 3, Cleary 2
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- The Cougars scored first on a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the third, but didn't advance a runner to third base the rest of the game
- Madonna tied the game in the sixth as Selena Deault delivered a pinch-hit RBI double and Emma Sikina followed with a run-scoring single
- The Crusaders walked off in the seventh as Jordan Johnson drew a one-out walk and Kattie Popko drove her in with a double to right field to end the game
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?
- Madisen Henry (5-6) tossed a gem to earn the win as she allowed two runs on five hits with three walks and nine strikeouts in a complete game
- Popko paced MU's 12-hit attack with a 4-for-4 day as she also drove in and scored a run
- Sikinia went 2-for-3 with an RBi and Sarah Holton added two hits
GAME 2: Madonna 4, Cleary 2
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Madonna led from start to finish thanks to a three-run third inning. Johnson plated Sikinia with a sacrifice fly and Kerstyn Comerzan doubled home a pair of runs with two outs
- Three consecutive singles in the fourth and a pair of hits in the fifth for the Cougars cut the lead to one
- The Crusaders added an insurance run in the fifth as Johnson scored from second on a Halee Warren sacrifice bunt
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?
- Ciera Jones (11-3) matched Henry's performance in the circle as she allowed two runs on six hits over seven innings with one walk and three strikeouts
- Comerzan paced the offense with a pair of hits and two RBI while Sikina, Holton and Johnson each had a hit and scored a run
- The Blue and Gold tallied four RBI and walked three times with zero strikeouts
- Cleary outhit MU 6-5

- It's a quick turnaround for the Crusaders as they host Indiana Tech in a rare tripleheader on Sunday, April 7. Varsity will play a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. with a reserve contest to follow at University Field.
