LIVONIA, Mich.– The Madonna University women's lacrosse team set nine team records and eight individual single-season records in 2019 and finished the season with back-to-back wins with an 18-8 victory over Bethel College (Ind.) in the pouring rain at the Madonna Athletics Complex on Saturday.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- The Pilots scored the first three goals of the contest and 5-of-7 to open a 5-2 lead. Consecutive goals from Christy Battersby, Haley Skeens, Brittney Leist and Madeleine Caswell put the Blue and Gold in front, 6-5. After trading goals, Skeens scored in the final three minutes for an 8-7 lead at the break.
- The Crusaders opened the second half with eight straight goals which included five from Battersby, two from Haney and one from Madison Kadwell. Valarie Patterson and Brittney Leist each scored to account for the final margin.
BY THE NUMBERS
- 32 (22): Madonna outshot Bethel 32-19 and put 22 shots on goal to the visitors' 13
- 17-11: The Crusaders won 17-of-28 draw controls with Leist leading the way with seven
- 7: Battersby tied the single-game record for points for a second straight contest as she scored six goals (tied for most in a game) and added an assist. She also had four ground balls, two caused turnovers and one draw control
- 6: Caswell had a great game as well with six points on two goals and a single-game best four assists. Leist tied the single-game mark for ground balls with six.
- 5: Haney finished with five draw controls and two points (2 g) while Chelsea Plant tied the single-game record for caused turnovers with five.
- 33, 22,: The team set single-game records for ground balls (33), caused turnovers (22) and free-position goals (6)
RECORD BOOK
- Battersby ends the season with program single-season records in points (53), goals (47), shots (105) and shots on goal (85)
- Caswell finishes the season with 19 assists, the most in a season
- Haney set season marks for ground balls (46) and draw controls (65) while Emily Daly set the mark for caused turnovers with 25
- Eloise Wilber set marks for save percentage (.396), goals against average (13.29) and wins (5)
- The team set records for points (203), goals (159), assists (44), shots (399), shots on goal (308), ground balls (296), draw controls (189), caused turnovers (128), free-position goals (39), save percentage (.397), goals against average (12.37) and wins (5)
