GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Timely hits and strong pitching propelled the Madonna University softball team to a sweep of Cornerstone University at CU Softball Field on Wednesday. The Crusaders won game one 5-1 before taking game two, 8-4.
GAME 1: Madonna 5, Cornerstone 1
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Brooklyn Dolloff drove in an unearned run in the second and two more earned run in the third for an early 3-0 lead
- Selena Deault delivered a pinch-hit double in Zoey Humes in the sixth and Amy Clegg singled in Kattie Popko in the seventh for the 5-1 win
- A sacrifice bunt plated the lone run for the Golden Eagles in the sixth
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?
- Madonna outhit Cornerstone 6-3 as Dolloff paced the offense with a 2-for-3 game with three RBI
- Popko scored twice and walked twice as MU drew seven walks
- The Blue and Gold recorded five sacrifice hits
- Madisen Henry (9-7) earned the win as she allowed one unearned run on three hits with four walks and eight strikeouts in a complete-game win
GAME 2: Madonna 8, Cornerstone 4
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Four hits and an error gave the Golden Eagles a 4-0 lead after one
- A pair of passed balls and an error scored Humes and Kerstyn Comerzan to cut the lead in half
- Dolloff continued her impressive day with an RBI single in the fourth and a Hannah Reinhold single tied the game. Becky Giacobbi singled home Reinhold for the 5-4 lead
- Comerzan tripled in a pair in the fifth and a Dolloff groundout brought her home for the final margin, 8-4.
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?
- Comerzan's 2-for-4 game paced the Crusaders' seven-hit attack while Popko and Yogi Hang each drew a pair of the team's six walks
- Halee Warren scored twice and her pinch runner, Humes, also scored while Comerzan scored twice and drove in two
- Dolloff added a pair of RBI and scored a run
- Ciera Jones earned her 15th win as she allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits with six strikeouts in a complete-game
