LIVONIA, Mich. - Madisen Henry continues to dominate the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference and
Kattie Popko had a 3-for-3 game as the Madonna University softball team split a WHAC doubleheader with Aquinas College, 1-0 and 5-3 on Saturday afternoon.
In between games, the Crusaders also took time to honor seven seniors who have been instrumental in continue the programs winning tradition. The seniors are Jordan Thayer, Kerstyn Comerzan, Kassidy Lipinski, Halee Warren, Haley Izworski, Jordan Johnson and Becky Giacobbi.
GAME 1: Madonna 1, Aquinas 0
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Henry scattered five hits over seven innings with one walk and struck out 10 and the offense did just enough to earn the win
- The lone run in the contest came in the second as Comerzan reached on a two-base error and scored on a one-out single off the bat of Amy Clegg
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?
- This is the first double-digit strikeout game for Henry this season
- Four different Crusaders, Sarah Holton, Popko, Clegg and Makayla Bassage recorded a hit for MU
GAME 2: Madonna 2, Aquinas 5
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- An RBI triple, a groundout and a home run plated three runs for the Saints in the second and a single brought home another in the third
- Popko homered to left in the fourth to cut the deficit to three
- A Saints home run in the sixth made it a four run game and the Crusaders had a chance to tie the game, but lacked the big hit they needed
- Popko singled to start the game, Warren reached on an error and Comerzan singled to load the bases, but the Blue and Gold scratched across just one run on a Selena Deault sacrifice fly for the final margin
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?
- After being out hit 5-4 in game one, Madonna outhit Aquinas 9-7 in game two
- Popko's 3-hit, two run, one RBI effort paced the offense while Comerzan added a pair of hits and four other Crusaders recorded a hit in the contest
- Ciera Jones (12-4) took the loss as she allowed five runs on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts over six innings
- Alyssa Fessenden finished the contest as she allowed a hit, a walk and struck out a batter in her lone inning of work
SCHEDULE CHANGES
- Sunday's doubleheader with Rochester, originally slated for Sunday at 1 p.m. has been postponed due to inclement weather
UP NEXT
- With Sunday's games postponed, the Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, April 17 as they head to Grand Rapids to face Cornerstone University at 3:30 p.m.
