LIVONIA, Mich. - The Madonna University baseball team exploded for 22 hits in their doubleheader sweep of Aquinas on Saturday at Ilitch Ballpark, claiming game one 12-7 before winning the nightcap 8-6.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

GAME ONE: MU 12, AQ 7

  • Aquinas used a seven hit second inning to jump out to an early 6-0 lead

  • The Crusaders scratched two runs across in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to a fielder's choice by Jerad Dokey and a sacrifice fly by Stephen Parker before exploding for five runs in both the fifth and sixth innings

  • The Saints tried to mount a late comeback but the Crusaders bullpen would not allow it as Ross Rickel closed the door for the final 1.1 innings of play

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?

  • MU posted 14 hits in comparison to the Saints 10

  • Adrian Reed paced the Crusaders offense, finishing 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored

  • Jerad Dokey also had a strong day at the plate collecting three hits and four RBI

  • Seven other Crusaders recorded a hit in the contest

  • Jack Ferguson finished the day with 7.2 innings pitched, allowing seven earned runs with three walks and five strikeouts

  • Rickel closed the door with no earned runs in 1.1 innings of work

GAME TWO: MU 8, AQ 6

  • Much like game one, the Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the fourth

  • The Blue and Gold evened the score in the fifth thanks to an RBI groundout by Matt Staelgraeve and RBI singles by Noah Renaud and Reed

  • MU took the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch that plated Dokey, who had previously reached on an error

  • A two-run home run by Gordon Ferguson in the bottom of the eighth extended the Crusaders lead to 8-5

  • John Beuckeleare would close the door in the ninth, allowing one run but preserving the save

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY

  • MU was outhit 8-11 but the Saints committed five errors in the contest

  • Reed continued his hot day at the plate as the only player with multiple hits in game two, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored

  • G. Ferguson led the way with a team high two RBI in game two

  • Victor Mencotti pitched 6.1 innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out seven

  • Daniel Gore was first out the pen, lasting one inning but earning the win

  • Beuckeleare earned the save with his 1.2 innings of relief
