LIVONIA, Mich. - After being unable to to get the big hit against Northwood last week, the Madonna University softball team got that clutch hit in the second game of Wednesday's Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener with No. 25 Lawrence Technological University to earn a split with the Blue Devils.
LTU won game one 6-2 as MU committed six errors in the contest before the Blue and Gold made stellar defensive plays and got several clutch hits to win the nightcap 4-2.
GAME 1: Madonna 1, Lawrence Tech 6
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Four of the Blue Devils six runs were unearned, which includes all three runs in the sixth as Madonna committed six errors in the frame
- Jordan Johnson doubled home Becky Giacobbi in the third to make it a 2-1 game and Amy Clegg plated Rebecca Barnes in the fourth to again cut the deficit to one, 3-2.
- Madonna loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but left the bases loaded.
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?
- Halee Warren and Clegg paced the nine-hit attack with two hits each
- Madonna drew two walks and struck out 10 times
- Madisen Henry allowed six runs, two earned, on 10 hits with one walk and eight strikeouts over seven innings
GAME 2: Madonna 4, Lawrence Tech 2
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Both teams scored in the first and third innings and Madonna got the go-ahead runs in the fifth
- LTU scores on four hits in the first, but a dropped fly ball gave MU life and Kerstyn Comerzan made the Blue Devils pay as she singled home a run to tie the score
- The visitors from Southfield plated an unearned run in the third, which the Crusaders promptly answered with a Kattie Popko sacrifice fly after Johnson tripled with one out
- Warren delivered the clutch hit in the fifth, a ground ball up the middle that scored Johnson and Sarah Holton for the 4-2 margin
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?
- Five different Crusaders recorded a hit as Comerzan collected a pair to lead the 6-hit attack
- Warren drove in two and Johnson scored three times
- Ciera Jones (10-3) earned the win as she allowed two runs, one earned, on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts over seven innings
- Lawrence Tech outhit Madonna 8-6
