BECKLEY, W.Va- The Madonna University men's soccer team traveled to Beckley, West Virginia for the Opening Round of the NAIA National Tournament for their first match against the Patriots from the University of the Cumberlands. The Crusaders fought through the entire game and thanks to a late first-half goal from Yuri Farkas Guglielmi the Crusaders were able to pull away with a 1-0 victory
 
The Crusaders season record sits at 14-4-3 overall, while the Patriots season ends with a record of 10-7-2. The Crusaders advance to face the host Golden Bears tomorrow afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams were playing the possession game as they were battling back and forth as neither team was able to take control of the game.
  • The match looked like it was going to go into halftime a tie at zero, but Farkas with 43 seconds remaining was able to give the Crusaders the lead for the 1-0 into the half.
  • The second half started out much as the same as the first with both teams going on the attack multiple times but to no avail.
  • The Blue and Gold held the Patriots without a shot in the second half.
INSIDE THE BOX
  • The Blue and Gold are now 1-1 all-time against the Patriots
  • The Crusaders outshot the Patriots 15-1 and put eight on goal to Cumberlands one
  • The Blue and Gold tallied seven corner kicks opposed to three for the Patriots
  • Multiple Crusaders tallied a shot with Bruno Piva de Castro (four shots, two on goal), Farkas (three shots, all on goal) and Caio Mazzo Nogueira (three shots, two on goal) pacing the Crusader offense
  • Smith recorded his eleventh shutout on the season which puts him in sole possession of first place for shutouts in a single season and second all-time with 22.
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders have a quick turnaround as they will now face off against the opening round host in West Virginia Tech University tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 23 with a 3 PM kickoff.
