Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Andrew Ripke

@MUCrusadersWSOC drop last match of the regular season

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Madonna Crusaders women's soccer team traveled to Grand Rapids to face off against the Golden Eagles of Cornerstone University in an attempt to clinch a home playoff game. The match was close all the way until the end as the Golden Eagles ended up winning the game in 100th minute of the game.

The Crusaders have now fallen to 12-5-1 record and 7-4 in the conference, while the Golden Eagles improve to 14-4 on the season and 8-3 in conference play.

The Crusaders end the regular season in fifth place in the conference. As they will now travel to Siena Heights for the conference quarterfinals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Crusaders were in a hole early as the Golden Eagles scored in the third minute of the game, when Alexys Riksen got a ball in the top of the box and was able to put it past Alex Thomas for the early 1-0 lead.
  • The remaining 42 minutes in the first half was a lot of back and forth as both teams were able to get multiple shots off but to no avail.
  • The second half started the same as the first when Sydnie Voss was able to head in a ball past the keeper on a cross from Megan Verant to tie the game up at one goal apiece.
  • The teams once again went back and forth for the rest of the second half as the match went into overtime.
  • The game looked like it was going to go into a second overtime, but with 17 seconds remaining Lucy Bouvier was able to put a ball in the box that Kylie Adams was able to put past Thomas for the golden goal.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Blue and Gold are now 22-11-5 all time against the Golden Eagles
  • The Crusaders won the shots by a tally of 12-7 and were tied with the Golden Eagles in shots on goal at seven.
  • Thomas made five saves on the day, in the loss while Mikayla Johnson saved six shots during the course of the game
  • The Crusaders led in corner kicks by a tally of 7-2
UP NEXT
  • The Blue and Gold will return to the pitch on Wednesday Nov. 6 at 2 PM when they will travel to Siena Heights in an attempt to reach the conference semifinal game.
