Saints stun @MUCrusadersWSOC in overtime

ADRIAN, Mich. - A slow start and turnovers in the defensive half led to a pair of penalty kicks that ultimately doomed the Madonna University women's soccer team in a 3-2 overtime loss to Siena Heights University on Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops the Crusaders to 7-2-1 on the year and 2-1 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play while the Saints improve to 7-3-1 overall and 3-1 in league action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Saints scored first, finding the back of the next seconds into the ninth minute and held the 1-0 lead after the first 45
  • Rachel Rubio tied the game as she got a foot on the ball in a group of players inside the box and slipped it past the keeper in the 47th minute
  • Siena Heights converted a PK at the 58:02 mark to again take the lead, but 1:32 later and Grace Thomas netted the equalizer as she placed the ball in the upper-left 90 after a nice cross from Sydnie Voss and Rubio
  • A little over three minutes into the extra period, the Saints again drew a penalty shot and converted for the win
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Blue and Gold outshot the Saints 13-7, but only had four on frame to the home team's five
  • The contest featured just two corner kicks with each team attempting one
  • 11 Crusaders attempted a shot in the contest led by Megan Verant's three
  • Madonna is now 20-23-2 all-time against Siena Heights, but are just 5-15 in Adrian and have lost their last 10 meetings there
PATTON'S PRESS
  • "The two PK's aside, what really hurt us today was a slow start and turnovers in our defensive half. The slow start resulted in SHU getting the initial goal, putting us in a hole. Several of the turnovers put us on our heals and led to the foul in overtime that resulted in the game-winning PK. If we can clean up those two areas, we probably win today."
UP NEXT
  • The Blue and Gold remain on the road as they travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana to face Indiana Tech on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. Live coverage links will be available at mucursaders.com.
