Fall Ball: @MUCrusadersBSB open season with sweep of Lakers

LIVONIA, Mich.- Strong pitching and a plethora of extra-base hits led the Madonna University baseball team to a sweep of Saturday's doubleheader against Roosevelt University. The Crusaders took game one 6-4 and then dominated game two 12-2 in a pair of seven-inning contests.

The Crusaders move to 2-0 to begin the 2019-20 season while the Lakers fall to 0-4 in the fall.

GAME 1
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Roosevelt scored first on a pair of first-inning singles, but Madonna starter Daniel Gore responded by sitting down the next 10 Lakers, allowing the offense to get to work.
  • The offense took off in the third inning as Kyle Aniol led off with a single, stole second and scored on a Noah Renaud double. Frankie Lucska doubled him home two batters later and Noah Moore pounded a home run to left-center for the 4-1 lead.
  • After the visitors got a run back in the fifth, Madonna added some insurance with three consecutive doubles from Renaud, Gordon Ferguson and Lucska for a 6-2 advantage.
  • They proved to be important runs as the Chicago, Illinois program added two more runs in the sixth, but Ryan Dusang stranded a pair of runners and John Bueckelare struck out a pair to earn the save.
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?
  • 6: The Crusaders pounded out six extra-base hits led by Renaud's two doubles
  • 5.2: Gore earned the win as he allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 5.2 innings
  • 2: Three Crusaders had a pair of hits as Renaud finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, Lucska finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored and Moore went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored
GAME 2
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • The Blue and Gold blitzed the Lakers' game two starter as they scored all 12 runs in the first three innings
  • The first five batters reached for MU as they sent nine batters to the plate in the frame which was highlighted by a Joey Pejuan grand slam to right field for the 5-0 lead. 
  • Lucska singled home Renaud in the second and then MU added six more in the third.
  • A pair of defensive miscues brought in three, Pejuan singled in another and Jerad Doeky singled home a pair for the 12-0 lead. 
  • Madonna's Nate Blain was light's out on the mound and the bullpen allowed two runs in the sixth, one earned, to seal the win.
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?
  • 8: Madonna drew eight walks against just three strikeouts; Blain struck out eight batters over four innings with three hits and two walks
  • 3: Renaud drew three walks and scored three times while Reed went 3-for-3 with a run scored
  • 5: Pejuan drove in five runs and scored twice as he finished 3-for-5
