Brown’s first double-double not enough for @MUCrusadersWBB in loss to Warriors

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. The Madonna University women's basketball team won three quarters at Garth Pleasant Arena on Saturday afternoon, but a poor second period doomed the Crusaders in a 77-66 loss to Rochester College. The Crusaders fall to 0-9 on the year and 0-4 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play while the Warriors move to 11-2 on the year and 5-1 in league play.  

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Madonna won the first quarter 20-19, despite a slow start. The home team raced out to a 7-2 lead before Hannah Reinhold scored four straight points to make it 7-6. Sydney Brown and Cierra Von Zittwitz scored the final four points of the period for the early lead.
  • The Crusaders won the third quarter 21-17 and the fourth, 23-20, but it was a dreadful second quarter that decided the game. The Warriors scored 21 straight points in the period before a Sheldon Bochenek layup with seven second left before the half made it 40-22. Madonna finished the quarter 1-13 from the field while Rochester shot over 50 percent.
  • To their credit the Crusaders fought back in the second half and a 9-0 run, highlighted by six points from Brown and a 3-pointer from Claire LeRoux, cut the deficit to 10, 74-64, with 1:32 to play, but the Warriors scored three of the final five points for the final margin.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Brown paced the offense with a career-best 20 points and 11 rebounds, her first career double-double
  • LeRoux netted 15 points while Naomi Davis added 11 and Von Zittwitz poured in 10 to with nine rebounds.
  • Madonna grabbed 30 rebounds, netted 36 points in the paint, scored 13 points off turnovers and had 13 second-chance points
  • The Blue and Gold finished 26-of-66 (39.4%) from the field, 6-of-23 (26.1%) from beyond the 3-point arc and 8-of-11 (72.7%) from the free throw line while the Warriors shot 49.1 percent from the floor, 57.9 percent from long range and 52.2 percent from the charity stripe.
