LIVONIA, Mich. – A 58-point first half helped the Madonna University men's basketball team to a 108-90 win over NCAA Division III Olivet College at the MU Activities Center on Wednesday night. The packed house saw the Crusaders put six players in double-figures to move to 4-0 while the Comets remain without a record as they played the contest as an exhibition.
HOW IT HAPPENED

Madonna opened the game on fire as baskets from Joshua Reynolds, Mark Mettie and Caleb Drumm propelled the Crusaders to a 6-0 lead. A Dwight Burton 3-pointer at 15:54 made it 13-3, but the Comets answered with a pair of their own to cut the lead to four. MU led by double-figures most of the half, but the visitors cut it to six, 29-23, with 7:42 left in the period. An Antonio Capaldi trey push the lead back to nine and the Blue and Gold closed the half on a 29-13 run to push the lead to 22, 58-36, at the break.

A Drumm three in the corner at the 15:40 mark push the advantage to a game-high 28 points, 74-46, but the Comets didn't back down. A 29-12 run by the team in the red and white cut the MU lead to 11, 86-75, with 8:58 to play. A technical foul on the Olivet bench led to four points at the line for MU as Burton and Reynolds sank four free throws to push the lead back to 15. A Mettie alley-oop ended another Comets run and sparked MU to a 10-0 run to ice the game. A late Comets' 3-pointer, settled the final score 108-90.

Madonna shot 59.1 percent (39-of-66) from the floor, 50 percent (13-of-26) from beyond the arc and 77.3 percent (17-of-22) at the free throw line. At the other end, Olivet finish 33-of-73 (45.2 %) from the field, 17-of-45 (37.8%) from long range and 7-of-8 (77.8%) at the charity stripe.

Burton finished with a game-high 30 points to go with seven rebounds and eight assists

Mettie and Malik Eichler each grabbed nine boards while the former added 18 points and the latter poured in 14

Capaldi added 14 points while Jonathan Swift and Reynolds each posted 10 points and Swift added seven assists and two steals while Reynolds grabbed six rebounds

MU outrebounded Olivet 46-24 and scored 36 points in the pant, 18 second chance points, and 16 points off turnovers
