@MUCrusadersWBB drops road contest to Holy Cross

NOTRE DAME, IND. – The Madonna University women's basketball team could not come back from a slow start on the road against Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon in Notre Dame, Ind., losing by a score of 42-67. The loss drops the Crusaders to 0-7 on the season and 0-2 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play, while the Saints of Holy Cross improve to 4-6 on the year and 2-1 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Crusaders offense struggled early, scoring only three points in the first quarter off a three-pointer by Claire LeRoux. The Saints responded with a 16-2 offensive run that lasted through the 6:32 mark of the second quarter. A free throw by Sheldon Bochenek halted the momentum before LeRoux hit a jumper and another three-pointer in the next two offensive possessions for the Blue and Gold, bringing the score to 11-22.

  • The Crusaders had a strong third quarter, putting up 22 points and outscoring the Saints for the first time in the game. Sydney Brown kicked off the scoring with a jumper in the paint before LeRoux knocked down a three pointer and Bochenek dropped in a layup to reduce to Saint lead to 15 points. Trailing by 20 points with 4:06 remaining in the quarter, LeRoux, Emily Huff, and Bochenek scored four consecutive baskets to bring the score to 32-46 with 1:45 remaining. The Crusaders were not able to complete the comeback in the fourth quarter, as the Saints outscored the Crusaders 14-7 to preserve the lead.
