@MUCrusaderMSOC uses dominant first half to run past Cougars, 3-1

LIVONIA, Mich.- The Madonna University men's soccer team used a dominant second half to run away from the Cleary University in a 3-1 victory at the Madonna Athletics Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The Crusaders improve to 10-3-0 on the year and 5-1-0 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play while the Cougars fall to 3-6-1 overall and 1-4-1 in league action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Issei Ito got the party started in the 13th minute as he ran onto a through ball, dribbled through a couple defenders and chipped the ball over a sliding keeper for the early lead.

  • Yuri Farkas Gugliemi added to the margin with a beautiful goal at 14:50. Following a Cleary yellow card, Farkas took a free kick from 20 yards out and struck a low, bender around the left side of the Cougars wall and just inside the far post for the two goal lead.

  • In the 36th minute the Crusaders made it a first half hat trick as Rodrigo Castro De Siqueira corralled a pass from Farkas and Caio Mazzo Nogueira

  • A tackle in the box in the 66th minute gave the Cougars a penalty kick which they converted for their lone tally.

  • Madonna had their own opportunity for a PK 33 seconds later, but the Cleary keeper was up to the task as he recorded the save to keep the Blue and Gold off the board in the final 45.

INSIDE THE BOX

  • The Crusaders outshot Cleary 16-6 in the contest which included an 8-1 margin in the first half. Madonna put six shots on frame to just two for the Cougars.

  • Fakras paced the offense with six shots, two on goal with a goal and an assist while Marlon Freitas added five shots, two on frame

  • Leonardo Abonizio attempted two shots while three other players had one shot with two, Siqueira and Ito, finding the back of the net

  • Smith stopped the lone shot he faced and allowed the PK goal in his 90 minutes in net
