Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

SEVEN SCHOOL RECORDS FALL AS @MUCRUSADERSMBB ROUTS EAST-WEST

LIVONIA, Mich. – The Madonna University men's basketball team set seven single-game program records, including points scored, in a 122-56 rout of East-West University at the MU Activities Center on Friday night. A complete recap will be posted shortly.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Crusaders (2-0) opened the game on an 11-2 run and that seven point margin is as close as the Phantoms (0-1) got the rest of the contest. After going up 18-8, the MU defense didn't allow a bucket for three minutes and stretched the lead to 14, 24-10. A Jonathan Swift (JR/Canton, Mich.) tip-in with 10 seconds left gave the Blue and Gold their largest lead of the half, 31 points, 55-24.

  • You couldn't get off to a faster start than the home team did in the second half as Chris Dierker (SR/Canton, Mich.) opened the final 20 minutes with a dunk which started a 13-0 run, capped by a pair of 3-pointers by Joshua Reynolds (SO/Canton, Mich.) and Stephan Umfress (SO/Monroe, Mich.). MU pushed the lead to 49, 77-28, on a pair of Antonio Capaldi (JR/Eastpointe, Mich.) free throws as the Crusaders held East-West to just one made basket in the opening 4:30 of the second half. A KJ Sayer (FR/Traverse City, Mich.) free throw with 3:30 left to play gave MU it's largest lead of the contest, 67 points, 117-50.

ON THE RECORD

  • Head Coach Noel Emenhiser on the win: " I thought we played with pretty good energy and I was impressed with our defensive intensity throughout the night. We didn't play smart basketball at times and took some unnecessary fouls, so there is room to improve, but holding them the way we did at the 3-point line and the way we moved the ball were really impressive."

  • Emenhiser on the records: "When you play really hard and play really well together, some of those records take care of themselves and come out of that effort."

  • On Jaryd Deakin's performance: "Jaryd came back improved in every aspect of the game; mentally, physically and skills wise. He's been a key piece to what we are doing. His ability to come off the bench and challenge at the rim, change and block shots are important for us moving forward."

  • On the bench play: "We challenged everyone on the bench tonight to come in and take the energy to the next level. We wanted to make it seem like we were coming at them in waves and the guys stepped up to that challenge and everyone, 1-14, played well tonight."

  • On KJ Sayer: "KJ is special because he gives everything he has every single day from practice to the game. He just goes out and does everything he can with zero expectations. He doesn't do anything for himself, just does what the team needs him to do and it translates to the stat sheet."
