Crusaders Draw 1-1 With UNOH After Early Schoenberger Goal

LIMA, Ohio - Madonna University (4-3-3) settled for a 1-1 draw with Northwestern Ohio (2-6-2) on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at Racer Stadium in Lima, Ohio, after Raul Oliu's penalty kick at 61:29 erased the Crusaders' early lead. Lucas Schoenberger scored less than seven minutes into the match, but three late saves denied Madonna a winning goal.

Schoenberger opened the scoring at 6:51, converting an assist from Onishi Haraki for a third goal of the season. The Crusaders earned seven first-half corner kicks to Northwestern Ohio's two, though the hosts held a 6-4 edge in shots before halftime. Afonso Henrique protected the advantage by stopping Ethan Collet's attempts at 29:59 and 33:18, sending Madonna into the break ahead 1-0.

Oliu brought Northwestern Ohio level with a third goal of the season from the penalty spot. Henrique then made two more saves to keep the match tied, denying Sunao Midorikawa at 70:54 and Vito Stanic at 76:22. Henrique finished with four saves across the full 90 minutes, allowing only the penalty kick on five shots on goal.

Madonna gained a player advantage when Leo Byrne received a red card at 81:53 after a yellow card at 80:21. Basile Lozachmeur led the Crusaders' late push, putting three attempts on target at 85:26, 87:49 and 87:57. Dean Sipura saved all three to preserve the draw. Lozachmeur finished with a team-high six shots, including three on goal, as Madonna produced eight second-half attempts.

Both teams finished with 12 shots, while Madonna held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks. Schoenberger contributed two shots, including the Crusaders' only other attempt on target, and Northwestern Ohio finished with a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. The result left Madonna at 2-0-1 in conference play and Northwestern Ohio at 1-1-1.

The Madonna men's soccer team will be back in action this Saturday, October 3, 2026 when they take on the University of Michigan-Dearborn for a 3:00 PM WHAC matchup.
