Crusaders Advance to the WHAC Championship Series

LIVONIA, Mich.-- Ashley Rosiewicz delivered the decisive swing Sunday afternoon, lifting a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Madonna a 4-3 softball victory over Cornerstone at University Field in Livonia.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Crusaders had to climb out of an early hole after Cornerstone scored all three of its runs in the top of the first. A bases-loaded walk to Paige Liddell brought in the opening run, and Kaylee Misialek followed with a two-run single to right to put Madonna behind 3-0 despite the Golden Eagles finishing with just one hit in the game. Madonna answered quickly in the bottom half of the inning when Faith Cramton lined a two-run single to left, cutting the deficit to 3-2 and settling the game after a chaotic opening frame.

From there, Camille Oyer gave the Crusaders exactly what they needed in the circle. The right-hander worked 6 1/3 innings, allowed one hit, struck out four and kept Cornerstone off the board after the first inning. Madonna's pitching staff held the visitors scoreless over the final six innings, even as Cornerstone drew five walks. Anna Battagin recorded the final two outs in the seventh to finish off the comeback.
Madonna broke even in the sixth. With the Crusaders still trailing by a run, Payden Whitmore came through with an RBI single down the left-field line that scored pinch-runner Lucy Bennin and tied the game at 3-3. That hit set the stage for Rosiewicz an inning later. Rosiewicz, who scored twice in the win, drove the first run of the seventh and ended the game with her home run to left.
The Crusaders finished with six hits and four RBIs, compared with one hit for Cornerstone. Cramton drove in two runs, Whitmore added the game-tying RBI and Rosiewicz supplied the final blow. Cornerstone starter Kara Sandberg went six innings and struck out three, but the Golden Eagles were charged with four runs allowed, two of them earned.

Madonna's defense also limited damage after the first inning, helping preserve a game that stayed within one run deep into the afternoon. In the end, the difference was the final swing, Rosiewicz's seventh-inning shot that turned a tight game into a walk-off Crusaders win to advance to the Championship series. The Crusaders will face off against Indiana Tech on Friday in a best of three series with the first pitch at 1:00 PM.
