Madonna Earns First On-Field Victory in Program History

OLIVET, Mich. – The Madonna University football team made history on Saturday afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex, defeating the University of Olivet, 45–28, to secure the first on-field victory in program history. The Crusaders, who previously held only one win in school history by COVID-19 forfeit in 2021, delivered a landmark performance behind record-breaking offensive play.

Freshman quarterback Nathan Patterson set a new school record with 322 passing yards, surpassing the previous single-game mark. Patterson completed 20 of 37 passes and threw three touchdown passes, including a 78-yard strike to wide receiver Mohammad Berro late in the first quarter. Berro finished with 111 receiving yards, ranking fifth in single-game program history.

Running back Kwame Miller also left his mark, rushing for 101 yards on 15 carries, tying the third-highest single-game rushing total in school history. Miller opened the scoring with a 7-yard touchdown run to give Madonna an early 7–0 lead.

Wide receiver Aiden Napier added a highlight moment with a 67-yard touchdown reception early in the fourth quarter, while Jeremy Barber and Rodney Francois also found the end zone through the air. LeShaun Bennett closed the game with a physical 4-yard rushing touchdown, paired with a successful two-point conversion, sealing the historic win.

Madonna's offense finished with 557 total yards on 80 plays, converting 10 of 18 third downs and scoring six total touchdowns. The Crusader defense also came up with key stops, including a forced fumble and a sack by defensive tackle Colt Oyervidez.

Olivet stayed within striking distance through three quarters, fueled by quarterback Daniel Avila's three touchdown passes. However, Madonna's 21 second-half points proved decisive as the Comets were held scoreless in the fourth quarter.

With the win, Madonna improved to 1–1 on the season. The victory not only marks the program's second official win but also the first earned between the lines, a milestone that will stand as a defining moment for Crusader football.
