Crusaders dominate the Blue Devils in their Home Opener

LIVONIA, Mich. -- The Madonna University baseball team (10-10, 2-0 WHAC) hosted their home opener against conference opponent Lawrence Tech on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders would complete the sweep over the Blue Devils with a 14-4 victory in game one and a 18-1 victory in game two. 

Game 1:

Game one would feature Alex Duley on the mound for the Crusaders who would go a complete game giving up just four runs, all which came in the first inning,  with five strikeouts on just 83 pitches.

The Crusaders would fall behind early in the first inning going down 4-0 after the first but after that it was all Crusaders in a combination of Duley tightening up on the mound and the bats letting loose for the Crusaders. The Crusaders would pick up two runs in the second off an RBI single from Logan Ellis to cut the game to 4-2. 

Then in the third the Crusaders offense would explode with a five run inning starting with a two run homerun from Bobby Cavin. Two batters later, Kooper Etheridge would homer down the left field line for a solo shot. Payton Mazzola would pick up an RBI single followed up by a Johnny Stepek double to right center to score Mazzola to take the Crusader lead to 7-4. 

The Crusaders would pick up two more runs in the 4th after Ty Stepek scored after a stolen base to third and an overthrow by the catcher. Then Kyle Revere would double down the left field line to bring home Aiden Shipman to make it a 9-4 ballgame. 

The Crusaders would continue to pile on the runs in the 5th and 6th innings to take home a 14-4 victory. 


Game 2:

Game two would feature Matthew Sevensma on the mound with one of his best outings of the season. Sevensma pitched a shutout and went all seven innings with only three hits given up and five strikeouts on 88 pitches. Garrett Kerr would come in to close things out for the Crusaders in the top of the 7th allowing just one hit with one strikeout.  

The Crusaders bats would get even hotter in game two scoring a whopping 18 runs on 17 hits. The Crusaders would do most of their damage in the middle innings after a scoreless first inning the Crusaders would pick up three runs in the second, one in the third, six in the fourth, and four in the fifth, and four in the sixth. Everyone joined in on the hitting barrage with 14 runs scored in the last three innings. The Crusaders would see a pair of homeruns in the game, one coming from Kooper Etheridge in the 2nd inning and one coming from David Aberouette in the bottom of the sixth, his first of his Madonna career.    


UP NEXT:

The Crusaders will be back in action Monday, March 17th to make up their game with Cleary that was rescheduled from Saturday, March 15th due to weather. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
