Crusaders keep it close against RV Racers

LIVONIA, Mich. - Returning home after their road trip to Gary, Ind., the Madonna Crusaders (2-2-1) prepared for their first conference game of the season. To open up Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play, the Crusaders started with one of the toughest teams in the country, the Receiving Votes University of Northwestern Ohio Racers (2-2-2). The Crusaders would play incredibly tough, displaying that they can run with the best teams in the country as they ended the first half tied 2-2. In the end, the Racers would pull away in the second half, winning 4-2 over the Crusaders.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Racers came out quite aggressive, dominating time-of-possession early in the match. Crusader goalkeeper Mackenzie Fifer had a diving save for the Racers' first shot on goal. However, the Racers were able to get past her with their second shot, taking an early 1-0 lead midway through the first half.

After holding out the Racers following their first goal and giving the offense a chance to strike, it was the Crusaders' turn to get aggressive. With just over fifteen minutes to play in the first half, Vitoria Sia would tie the game at 1-1 with a penalty kick. However, the Racers would strike back with a fast-break goal, stealing the lead back as quick as they lost it.

The Crusaders would not let the Racers' quick goal get them down, as shortly after Sia would find Rehema Sango for her first goal of the season. Everything was tied up at 2-2 with less than ten minutes to play in the half.

The Crusaders' defense was able to hold off the Racers for the remainder of the half, going into the break tied with one of the best teams in the nation.

The Racers came out firing after the break, going down and scoring in the opening minutes of the second half. The Crusaders would keep fighting, but the Racers would hold them scoreless in the second half. Tacking on another score before it was all said and done, the Racers would go on to win 4-2.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Sia scored one goal and had one assist.
  • Sango scored her first goal as a Crusader.
