Crusaders unable to overcome Cardinals on the road

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Coming off of their mid-season bye week, the Crusaders returned to the gridiron this afternoon to take on their rivals from down the road: the Cardinals of Concordia University Ann Arbor. While the Crusaders would start strong, it would be costly turnovers that would ultimately result in their loss to the Cardinals 67-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Crusaders would start out on defense, forcing a three-and-out on the game's first possession. However, once they got on offense, a failed punt attempt would give the Cardinals the ball in the redzone.

After their first possession slip up, the Crusaders' offense came back hungry. In a fourth-and-three situation in their own territory, quarterback Keel Watson IV found tight end Nick Hayward wide open for a 38-yard fourth down conversion. Following that up, Coach Guminsky would dial up a trick play, in which Taurean Singletary threw a pass to fellow wide receiver Imarion Kelly for a 28-yard touchdown. After the extra point was blocked, the Crusaders were right back in it at 7-6.

The Madonna defense would continue to shut down the Cardinals, forcing multiple three-and-outs, as well as defensive back Johnte Nichols snagging an interception early in the second quarter. However, the offense would seemingly lose its rhythm, as costly turnovers suddenly became all too common. A blocked field goal returned by the Cardinals and a fumble return touchdown lead to the score becoming quickly inflated. The Cardinals would go on to win 67-6.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Singletary led the team in receiving with four catches for 49 yards, and also threw a touchdown.
  • Nah'Shon Williams carried the ball nine times for 39 yards.
  • Kelly had four grabs for 33 yards and a touchdown.
  • Reese Pulliam led the defense with five tackles.
  • Tommy Larson had the game's lone sack.
UP NEXT:

The Crusaders will continue their road trip as they head down to Defiance, Ohio, to take on the newest member of the Mid-States Football Conference: the Defiance College Yellow Jackets. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm next Saturday, October 26.
