LIVONIA, Mich. - The Madonna University football team suffered a 42-7 defeat to Roosevelt University (Ill.) on Saturday afternoon from Livonia Churchill High School. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Crusaders started with the ball and were able to drive to the Lakers' 31-yard line, however the drive stalled after Max Morris was sacked and a pass to Emerson Combs fell incomplete. Josh DePaulis came in to punt for Madonna and pinned Roosevelt at their own three-yard line.

Madonna's defense forced a three-and-out by the visitors as the Lakers were forced to punt from their own endzone. A great return by Jacob Irelan set the Crusaders up at the Roosevelt 14. Morris and the offense capitalized and D'Vonta Garrett ran it in from one-yard out for the touchdown. Following the extra point by Darren Francis, Madonna took a 7-0 lead.

The Lakers second drive of the afternoon went into the second quarter. Roosevelt quarterback Carson Budke capped off the 10 play, 60-yard drive with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Tenner. After the made PAT, the score was now 7-7 with under 12 minutes left in the first half. 

The Crusader offense failed to get anything going the rest of the second quarter, and Budke's second touchdown pass of the day to Keonta Nixon gave the Lakers a 14-7 halftime lead. 

The next score didn't come until late in the third quarter, as a 16-yard touchdown run by Jerell Calhoun gave Roosevelt a 21-7 advantage heading into the final period. 

In the fourth, three touchdown passes by Budke put the game away for the Lakers, giving Roosevelt the 42-7 Mid-States Football Association crossover victory over the Crusaders. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 

• Madonna was led by Spencer Rivera, who finished with nine carries and 56 yards on the ground.
• Dante Cardinali and Nick Miller led the defense with six total tackles each. 
• Tommy Larson and Michael Momoh each recorded a sack for the Crusaders. 
• Roosevelt outgained Madonna 417-133.
