Rentrope shines bright under the lights

UPLAND, Ind. - The Madonna University Crusaders stayed on the road this weekend as they returned to the Hoosier state to face the Taylor University Trojans under the lights in a night game matchup. The Trojans got off to a hot start, but the Crusaders turned up in the second half led by freshman quarterback Johnathan Rentrope. The final score from Turner Stadium: 54-14 Trojans.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Trojans exploded early, taking a 27-0 lead over the Crusaders in the first half as they were unable to get on the board. Despite their slow start to the contest, the Crusaders got some momentum going in the second half when freshman signal caller Johnathan Rentrope relieved Max Morris.

The Crusader defense started the second half hot as Ramon Stallings Jr. forced a fumble on Taylor's first offensive drive of the half. As Rentrope and the Crusader offense began finding their rhythm, they finally got on the board with an eight-yard dot from Rentrope to senior tight end Connor Carrigan for the touchdown. This play marked the first career score for both the freshman quarterback and the senior tight end.

Rentrope found the endzone again on the Crusaders next drive, this time on the ground. The quarterback showed off his dual-threat capabilities with a 14-yard rush into the Trojan endzone as the Crusaders got on the board once more before the conclusion of the game.

Despite their late game explosion, the Crusaders would not be able to come back, falling 54-14 on the road to the Trojans. However, Rentrope proved tonight that he has the ability to lead this Crusader offense to victory. Going into their last three games, the Crusaders have a newfound confidence with Rentrope at the helm.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Rentrope was 8-for-13 passing with one touchdown and picked up 22 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
  • Freshman running back Glen Jackson led the team with 54 yards on the ground.
  • Graduate linebacker Dante Cardinali led the team with 12 total tackles and two tackles for loss.
  • Defensive end Tommy Larson and senior Jesse Morris each recorded two sacks.

UP NEXT:

The Crusaders will return home next week to face the No. 13 Cardinals of Concordia University Ann Arbor at home. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm at Churchill High School Saturday, October 28th.
