Softball Season Comes to an End in National Tournament

THE BASICS
Score: Game 1: Madonna University 0, Columbia College (Mo.) 3
Game 2: Madonna University 0, Freed-Hardman University (Tenn.) 1
Location: Morgan Stadium, Henderson, Tenn.

HENDERSON, Tenn. -- On May 16, the Madonna University softball team played in their second consecutive NAIA Opening Round since the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

GAME 1
For the first game, Madonna took on the No.18 Cougars of Columbia College. WHAC Pitcher of the year Maeson Schlaud got the start in the circle for the Crusaders. Schlaud continued her dominate season as she struck out six batters in the first two innings. The Crusaders would get their first hit in the game in the bottom of the second thanks to a Bailey Matin single. A great pitching battle was on full display as it was 0-0 going into the fifth inning. In the top of the fifth, Columbia started off with back-to-back hits to make it 1-0.  In the sixth, the Cougars would tack on another run off an error by the Crusaders. Sadly, the Crusaders bat did't wake up and dropped game one 3-0. However, despite the loss, Schlaud went 7.0 innings pitched, struck out 12 batters and only allowed six hits.

GAME 2
In the second game, the Crusaders would take on No. 3 Lions of Freed-Hardman University in an elimination game. Once again, was a pitchers' duel as both pitchers had a shutout until the bottom of the third. That's when the Lions hit a double down the left field line and scored a runner from first base making it 1-0. Schlaud would settle back in and not allow a single hit after that.

The Crusaders' offense struggled against one of the top pitchers in the NAIA. Sadly, could not get anything going and their season came to and end losing this one 1-0.

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Schlaud: 14.0 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 17 Ks
