LIVONIA, Mich. -- The Madonna University softball team won both games of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Rochester University in a pair of games. The Crusaders won the first game 13-2, and the nightcap 5-0.
GAME 1 - HOW IT HAPPENED
The Crusaders' offense started off hot in the bottom of the first, with Kattie Popko opening the scoring by reaching on an error that scored Veronica Pezzoni. Chylece Cluck on a passed ball, and an Alissa Gauthier single scored Popko. Later in the inning, a Brooke Garbarino single scored Sarah Holton to make the lead 4-0.
Madonna followed it up in the second, with a Cluck triple scoring Pezzoni. Popko then hit an RBI single to score Cluck. Popko would score on a Sarah Holton single, and after two passed balls, Holton scored on a Jenna Gilbert groundout. After the bottom of the second, the Crusaders held a 8-0 lead.
Jamie Gietl scored Amy Clegg with a single in the third to make it 9-0, and the offense had another big inning in the fourth. Emily Theisen scored on a Jenna Gilbert double to get Madonna into the double digits. The Crusaders would add three more runs in the fourth to make their lead 13-2.
The WHAC PItcher of the Week, Maeson Schlaud had another strong game in the circle for the Crusaders, earning the win to improve her record on the season to 11-0. Schlaud went four innings, giving up two runs on three hits, striking out seven. Elisabet McCann relieved Schlaud in the fifth, closing out the game with a 1-2-3 inning, including two strikeouts.
GAME 2 - HOW IT HAPPENED
The Crusaders offense got on the board quickly again in game two, as Cluck singled to score Pezzoni, who led off the bottom half of the inning with a triple.
That was the only run scored in the game until the bottom of the 6th, when the Crusaders added insurance. Holton tripled to score Gauthier, and then Holton scored on a Kelsi Littleton single. Littleton scored on a Bailey Martin single. Ryley Ostentoski pinch ran for Martin, and scored on an Amy Clegg single. The inning would end with a 5-0 Crusaders lead.
Jane Anderson through a complete game shutout for the Crusaders, to improve her record to 3-1 on the season. She only allowed four hits and one walk, and struck out 12 Rochester batters.
