MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.-- The Madonna University softball team made it look easy last week on Wednesday morning during the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach, beating Gwynedd Mercy University 13-0 as well as Penn State Beaver 5-2. 


GAME 1 - HOW IT HAPPENED

The Crusaders struck quickly in the top of the first inning, as Veronica Pezzoni tripled to lead off the game. She would score off of an Chylece Cluck bunt single, who also advanced to second on an error. Up third, Kattie Popko singled to center, scoring Cluck. Later in the frame, Brooke Garbarino singled, scoring Bailey Martin-Brown and Alissa Gauthier, giving the Crusaders a 4-0 lead.

Madonna would show good discipline with two outs in the second, as Gauthier and Martin-Brown both walked in runs. Garbarino would get her second RBI single, as Gauthier and Kelsi Littleton scored. The Crusaders would add three runs in the 3rd and two in the 4th.

Maeson Schlaud commanded the Crusaders on the mound, pitching four standout innings, allowing no runs on just three hits, and recording ten strikeouts. Jenna Gould would relieve her for the 5th inning, also allowing no runs.

BY THE NUMBERS
 

• Gauthier reached base in all four of her plate appearances, with two walks, a triple, and a fielders' choice, recording three RBI's
• The Crusaders showed their leather, committing no errors in the field

GAME 2 - BY THE NUMBERS
 

• Madonna scored two runs in the 1st and added three in the 6th, before allowing two in the 7th. The Crusaders were then able to shut the door to win 5-2
• Veronica Pezzoni hit her fourth triple of the season, and Kattie Popko hit her second home run
• Elisabet McCann pitched six innings, allowing two runs on three hits, also striking out seven hitters

• The rest of the Crusaders' time in Myrtle Beach has been canceled due to inclement weather.
• Madonna will play their first home series of the season with a doubleheader against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) on Saturday, March 19, with games at Noon and 2:00 PM.
