Men's Soccer Suffers Heartbreaking Loss in NAIA Opening Round

MARSHALL, MO. - The Madonna University 16th ranked men's soccer team came out with a tough loss in penalty kicks 4-2 in the NAIA National Tournament game against Williams Baptist College on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Crusaders came out in their first round of the tournament with high energy and excitement as they looked to get the teams first playoff win since 2019. The Crusaders used that energy to strike first in the first half with a penalty kick goal by Wagner Gameiro in the 20th minute for his 7th goal of the year and put the Crusaders up 1-0 heading into halftime.

In the second half, Williams Baptist came out ready to answer and were able to do so quickly as they scored only a 1:17 into the second half. After that, the game came to a stalemate as both teams gave themselves plenty of chances but were unable to capitalize and the second half ended with a 1-1 tie. For the third straight game, the Crusaders found themselves in another overtime contest.

Throughout the majority of overtime the Crusaders were on the attack, spending a majority of each of the 10 minute overtime periods on the offensive end but were unable to capitalize on some very good chances to put the game away and again for the third straight game the Crusaders were headed to a shootout to decide the winner of the first round game in the NAIA tournament.

The Crusaders would go into the shootout with the Eagles having the first shot out of the best of 5 shootout. Unfortunately, the Crusaders would come out on the losing end of the shootout and fall to Williams Baptist 4-2 in the shootout.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

● Madonna had 15 shots to the Eagles 18.
● Madonna had 3 corners to the Eagles 10.
