GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Madonna University's women's soccer team began Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play Saturday afternoon as they traveled to Cornerstone University (Mich.) and came away with a 3-0 victory. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Crusaders were on the attack early, 55 seconds into the game Abby Werthman played a great through ball to the left side of the pitch to a wide open Grace Thomas as she was able to bury it into the bottom right corner to take a 1-0 lead. 

The Crusaders would keep the pressure on the Golden Eagles throughout the first half. At the 18:27 mark, Thomas and Werthman would connect again, except this time they switched roles as Thomas found Werthman for the score to go up 2-0. 

In the second half, it was fairly quiet compared to the first. Both teams had very few opportunities until the 75:50 mark, when Mary Philimona was able to show off her breakaway speed and outran her only defender and found the back of the net to make it 3-0. 

The Golden Eagles did not go away easily though. They had 11 total shots, two on goal and racked up eight corner kicks. The Crusader's goalie tonight was Brooke Bruletti, just like her previous four starts, Bruletti and the defense were dominant and Bruletti came away with two saves.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
 

• The Crusaders extended their unanswered goal streak to 42.
•  Bruletti was stellar in goal tonight, recording her fourth straight shutout of the season.

Madonna will host Concordia University (Mich.) at The Madonna Athletic Complex on Wednesday, September 29 for its next contest. Kickoff will be at 2:00 p.m.
