Defense Shines as Crusaders Nab Second Straight Shutout

LIVONIA, Mich.-- The Madonna University men's soccer team came home to the Madonna Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon for another contest, this time to defeat the Cougars of Mount Vernon Nazarene University (Ohio.) 2-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Crusaders remained in control and had possession of the ball a good portion of the first half. It was a fast paced first half as both  team's goalies would see a lot of action as there were a combined 13 shots.

At the 43:01 mark Madonna went on a counter attack and Ryota Nakajima was about to run past the defender into the box, he was taken down and the Crusaders were awarded a penalty kick. Coach Zathey had Wagner Gameiro take the kick and Gamerio buried it into the upper right corner.

In the second half, the pace didn't slow down, both teams had a lot of opportunities to score. In the 70th minute of play, Gmerio showed us all his dribbled moves as he nutmegged his defender and found Nakajima cutting inside the box for an insane Crusader goal to go up 2-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • The Crusaders would win the shots battle 16-11 total and 6-5 on goal over the Cougars.
  • Madonna's keeper Youssou Ouendeno would make a couple quality saves and finished with five saves on the day, getting his fourth shutout of the season.
