Vultaggio’s goal sends Crusaders to Championship game, NAIA Opening Round

LIMA, Ohio – The Madonna University women's soccer team picked up a hard fought 1-0 win Wednesday afternoon against the University of Northwestern Ohio in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference semifinals. The win advances the Crusaders into the WHAC Championship game for the second time in the last three years. 

With Aquinas College's win in the other WHAC semifinal matchup against Cornerstone University, Madonna earned an automatic bid to the opening round of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics tournament which will take place next week April 15-17. It's the Crusaders' first trip to the NAIA National Tournament since 2005 and third in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • Neither team was able to take a lead throughout the first half despite UNOH outshooting the Crusaders 13-3 in the half. Sophomore goalie Alex Thomas made nine saves throughout the half as well to keep the game at 0. 
  • The game finally saw its first goal in the 67th minute when senior Nicolette Vultaggio received a through ball from Karina Arnold and was able to sidestep the defender and hit it into the far side of the net to give the Crusaders the lead. 
  • Both teams saw additional shots throughout the half but the defenses were able to hold the game at 1-0. Madonna led the shot column 9-3. 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Throughout the entire game, UNOH controlled the shots 16-12. While also leading the total shots on goal 10-5. 
  • Madonna goalie Thomas tallied a season-high seven saves in the match today. 
  • The Blue and Gold created opportunities on the offensive side as they were able to take five corner kicks as opposed to the three from UNOH.

  • The Crusaders will travel to Grand Rapids for the WHAC Championship game on Saturday, April 10.
