GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.– The Madonna University women's soccer team highlighted their 2020-21 season with the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament title Saturday night against Aquinas in the rain. It was a close match all throughout the game which needed an extra two minutes for Megan Verant to tally the golden goal.

This is the first WHAC tournament title since 2005 for the Crusaders and their fifth overall. Previous Championships occurred in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005.

Both teams have automatically received an automatic qualifying bid to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, which starts Thursday April 15.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Aquinas struck first in the game in the 12th minute when Breanna Probst knocked in a goal following a couple of deflections from a corner kick.
  • Throughout the next 61 minutes both goalies were able to make quality saves in order to keep the score at 1-0 through the next until the 72nd minute.
  • At that time, Verant was able to get a shot off but was blocked by a defender, but when the ball came out Sierra Nissan was able to put the ball back into the box and over a defenders head to the feet of Abby Werthman who was finally able to tie the game backup for the Crusaders.
  • Alex Thomas in goal for the Crusaders made two more saves before the buzzer to send the match into extra time.
  • 30 seconds into the first overtime period Aquinas was able to get off two quality shots, the first which was blocked and the second that was put wide right in order to extend the game.
  • A minute and thirty seconds later in the 92nd minute, the ball was being deflected around and eventually found the right foot of Megan Verant who was able to put it over the Saints keepers head into the upper right corner for the sudden victory win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The game was truly even as the shots saw Madonna and Aquinas tie with 17, except the Crusaders had the edge 8-6 in shots on goal.
  • The Blue and Gold kept the offensive pressure and were able to tally seven corner kicks to the Saints five.
  • The two goalies Thomas and Braeleigh McCoy combined for 11 saves on the rainy evening with McCoy gaining the slight 6-5 edge.
