Garbarino, Gilbert lead Crusaders to sweep of Saints

LIVONIA, Mich. - The Madonna University softball team earned a sweep of Aquinas College (Mich.) in a battle for first place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference on Saturday afternoon at University Field. The Crusaders did so in dramatic fashion with a 4-3 walk-off victory in game one and a two-run, pinch-hit home run in the fifth inning of game two, a 6-2 win. 

The Blue and Gold improve to 17-5 on the season and 6-2 in WHAC play while the Saints fall to 17-7 on the season and 9-3 in league play. 

GAME 1: Madonna 4, #RV Aquinas 3
It was a quiet opening three innings before Kattie Popko opened the bottom of the fourth with a ringing double to center. Brooke Garbarino followed with a base hit and Brooklyn Dolloff plated the first run with a sacrifice fly. Brooklyn Prescott drove in the second run with a double to left-center. 

Three hits, a wild pitch, and an MU error gave the Saints the 3-2 lead in the fifth and that's where the score remained until the seventh. Jenna Gilbert led off with a pinch-hit single, Veronica Pezzoni singled and an error loaded the bases with one out for Popko who drew a four-pitch walk to tie the game. After a pitching change, Garbarino walked it off for the Crusaders with a single to right field for the 4-3 win.

Madonna outhit the Aquinas 7-6 in the contest and struck out just twice to the Saints six.

GAME 2: Madonna 6, #RV Aquinas 2
The Crusaders got on the board early in game two as Makayla Bassage doubled to center with two outs to score Emily Pawelski and Dolloff. Both offenses went quiet until the fifth when the Saints scored a pair of unearned runs on two hits to even the score.

It was a short-lived tie as Pezzoni doubled with two outs in the fifth and Gilbert delivered off the bench with a two-run home run down the left-field line for the 4-2 lead. The Crusaders added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth as Amy Clegg singled up the middle two score two with two outs for the 6-2 lead. 

Madonna outhit Aquinas 8-6 in the game and struck out four times to the Saints five.
