Women’s Soccer picks up first win of the year against Blue Devils

THE BASICS

Score: Madonna University 3, Lawrence Tech University 1
Records: Madonna (1-2, 1-1), Lawrence Tech (5-3-1, 4-1-1)
Location: Blue Devils Stadium, Southfield, Mich.

SOUTHFIELD, Mich.– The Madonna University women's soccer team traveled to Southfield for their first game in a week and a half. The game was a one-score difference for the majority of the game until Mary Philimona's goal in the 84th minute gave the Crusaders an extended lead. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Madonna was able to get the early 1-0 lead off the foot of Megan Verant when she got the ball after a couple of deflections off of the Blue Devils defender to score the first goal of the season. 
  • The Blue Devils though would respond minutes later when Jessie Koje got the ball past Crusaders goalie Alex Thomas. The next 14 minutes would see both teams go back and forth down the field with a couple of strong opportunities on both sides. 
  • In the 25th minute the Crusader defense was able to take the ball away from the Blue Devil offense and Madonna forward Nicolette Vultaggio was able to put the ball in the back of the net. Following the kickoff Vultaggio nearly had another goal but was saved by the Lawrence Tech goalie. 
  • Neither team was able to get the ball past either goalie. Madonna did have a couple more chances in the 30th minute but Lawrence Tech stopped the run. 
  • The final goal of the game which solidified the Crusader lead came in the 84th minute off the foot of Philmona when she was able to beat the keeper to the far side of the net. 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Crusaders were able to outshoot the Blue Devils offense 15-7 which also includes 13-4 in shots on goal. 
  • Madonna goalie Alex Thomas only needed to save three shots on the day with the help from her defense. 
  • Eight different Crusaders tallied shots throughout the afternoon and were led by Grace Thomas with three. 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders will return home for their first match of the season at the Madonna Athletic Complex when they will go up against Indiana Tech on Wednesday March 10 which will have a 1 PM kickoff.
