BRIGHTON, Mich. - The Madonna University softball team pushed its record to 4-1 with their third straight win with a midday sweep of Cleary University inside the Legacy Center in Brighton on Tuesday.
The Crusaders won game one 6-1 before recording the first shutout of the season in game two, 7-0.
GAME 1: #RV Madonna 6, Cleary 1
The Crusaders posted a pair of crooked numbers in the first and third innings with a pair in the first and three in the third. Brooke Garbarino got the scoring started with an RBI double and Brooklyn Prescott plated another. Veronica Pezzoni drove in Emily Pawelski in the second and the latter added a two-run double in the third for a 4-0 lead before Amy Clegg drove in two more with a base hit.
The Cougars lone run came in the third on an RBI double.
Madonna tallied 13 hits in the contest led by Kattie Popko and Garabarnio who each had three with Pawelski finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Alyssa Fessenden earned the win as she allowed one run on two hits with three walks and six strikeouts over five innings while Ciera Jones tossed two shutout innings.
GAME 2: #RV Madonna 7, Cleary 0
It was a pair of crooked numbers again for the Blue and Gold as MU scored four runs in the second and three in the third shutout win.
A two-out Bailey Martin-Brown triple got the offense going in the second and Fessenden scored her with a double. Two batters later, Garbarino singled home two more and Popko finished the inning with an RBI double for the 4-0 lead.
Jenna Gilbert and Brooklyn Dolloff led of the third with back-to-back doubles to add another tally, then Garbarino added two more two-out RBI with a single for the final margin.
Maeson Schlaud earned her first win of the season as she allowed two hits, a walk and struck out five over five innings while Jones closed the game with a pair of perfect frames.
Madonna tallied 11 hits to two for the Cougars, led by Pezzoni who finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and Garbarino who went 2-for-3 with four RBI and a run scored.
UP NEXT
The Crusaders head back to the Legacy Center on Friday, March 5 as they compete in the Legacy Classic hosted by Concordia University (Mich.). Madonna opens against Goshen at 8:45 a.m. followed by a matchup with No. 22 Saint Xavier University (Ill.) at 10:30 a.m. The day concludes at 2 p.m. against Indiana University at South Bend.
