Crusader and Racers Go the Distance

LIVONIA, Mich.-- Madonna University's Women's Soccer team was back in action as they took on the University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) at the Madonna Athletic Complex and ended up tying 2-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Madonna looking to bounce back after losing the first game of the season in their last outing as the Crusaders came out strong 19 seconds in with Abby Werthman getting a shot off but sailed wide left of the goal. At the 11:28 mark, Grace Thomas passed the ball back to Morgan Kroon who took a touch and shot a rocket from outside the box and went right above UNOH's goalie head to make it 1-0.

UNOH would respond less than a minute later with another goal from outside the box to tie it all up at 1-1. The rest of the first half was remotely quiet as both teams were able to get some shots off, none were successful.

In the second half, the Crusaders wasted no time again as Victoria Sia was able to get two shots on goal in the first six minutes of the half, but UNOH's goalie made both saves to keep us tied at 1-1. At the 56:58 mark, Sia sent a cross into the box and Holly McManus dived for the ball and was able to get her head on the ball and it sailed into the back of the net to go up 2-1.

In the winding minutes of the game, UNOH would catch a break as in the 88th minute the Crusaders were called for a handball in the box and the Racers were awarded a penalty shot. The Crusaders' goalie Brooke Bruletti made an incredible diving save but could secure the ball and UNOH were able to score off the rebound tying the game 2-2.

In overtime, the Crusaders were able to get great opportunities. Sierra Nissan and Thomas both had multiple shots on goal, and Julieann White hit the crossbar but it seemed as nothing would go the Crusaders way and this one would end in a 2-2 tie.
