Crusaders Win Thanks to Sia’s Golden Goal

LIVONIA, Mich.-- Madonna University's Women's Soccer team was back in action as they were on the road against Lourdes University (Ohio) and came away with a thrilling 2-1 overtime win. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

As usual, the Crusaders were off to an early attack as 29 seconds into the game Abby Werthman ripped a shot but sailed off to the left. Madonna had a couple more chances in the opening minutes as Mary Philimona had a shot on goal and Grace Thomas had one sail over the crossbar. 

At the 16:01 mark in the match, Sydnie Voss stole the ball from a Gray Wolf defender and sent a cross into the box. The ball skipped across the box and landed right at Thomas's feet, she took a touch and beat the keeper going right.

Lourdes would be able to get the equalizer in the first half. At the 34:20 mark, Lourdes took a shot from 25 yards out and put it in the top shelf to make it 1-1. 

In the second half, the Crusaders kept the pressure dialed up as they shot the ball 10 times and had three on goal but couldn't find the back of the net. 90 minutes was not enough and they were headed into overtime. 

Overtime did not take long, Werthman played a great ball down the left side of the field to Voss who then crossed it into the box to Victoria Sia. Sia, between a defender and the goalie, took a touch and squeezed it past the goalie for the game-winning goal.

  • Voss totaled her fourth and fifth assists of the season.
  • Crusader goalie Brooke Bruletti allowed her first goal in six games.

The Crusaders will be on the road at O'Laughlin Stadium on Saturday October 13, at 4:00 p.m. for a match against Siena Height University (Mich.)
