TUCSON, Ariz.- The Madonna University softball teams kicked off the first day of spring training against Presentation College and Mount Marty College. The Crusaders won game one against Presentation College, 9-0 and game two against Mount Marty College 4-3.

GAME 1: Madonna 9, Presentation 0
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW 
Madonna comes out swinging as Katie Popko singled to center scoring Sarah Holton giving the Crusaders an early lead. Carrying into the second, Veronica Pezzoni singled to right field allowing Emma Sikina to score, 2-0
The third inning was dominated by the Crusaders as Selena Deault singles to left, followed by a single line drive from Brooklyn Dolloff. Brooklyn Prescott ropes a home run to score both Crusaders placing Madonna ahead 5-0
The fourth inning resulted in two more points for the Crusaders after a double from Deault. 
The Blue and Gold finished the game early with a inside-the-park homerun from Emma Sikina, final score 9-0. 

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY? 
  • Madisen Henry earned the win as she allowed only one hit over five innings, with five strikeouts 
  • The Crusaders collected thirteen hits with 9 RBI's 


GAME 2: Madonna 4, Mount Marty 3 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW 
Crusader, Popko tripled to center field collecting the first RBI of the game, scoring Pezzoni
Pezzoni led off the 3rd with a single to left-center. Working around the bases, Pezzoni steals 2nd, 3rd, and home. Brooklyn Garbarino places a suicide squeeze to score Popko
The Blue and Gold had two single ground balls by both Jenna Gilbert and Sarah Holten, placing them in scoring position. Popko doubles to center field to score Gilbert. 

WHAT DO THOSE NUMBERS SAY? 
  • Pezzoni leads the Crusaders with a total of three stolen bases 
  • Popko collected both a double and a triple resulting in two RBI's 
  • Ciera Jones gets the win after walking only one Lancer. 

UP NEXT
The Crusaders are scheduled for two more games on Monday, March 2 against Trinity Christain College at 11 a.m. and Northwestern College at 3:30 p.m.
