ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Madonna University softball team opened the 2020 campaign with a split of a two-team doubleheader at the NAIA Leadoff Classic hosted by Roosevelt University on Friday at the Dome at Rosemont. Madisen Henry was nearly unhittable in a 4-3 win over Judson University (Ill.) in the opener before the defense and offense sputtered in a 5-1 loss to Saint Xavier University (Ill.).

In the season opener, senior Madisen Henry allowed just four baserunners and one run while the offense did just enough as Kattie Popko drove in two runs, Sarah Holton scored twice and Brooklyn Dolloff went 3-for-4 at the plate. The big inning for the Blue and Gold came in the sixth as they scored three runs on three hits and an error to take a 4-1 lead. The Eagles put the tying run on second after a two-run double in the seventh, but Alyssa Fessenden shut the door with a strikeout and some help from shortstop Amy Clegg who made an impressive play in the hole to end the game.

In the second game, the Crusaders defense made three errors and the offense was held to three hits and one run, a Clegg RBI single up the middle that scored Popko in the fourth, and it added up to a 5-1 loss.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Henry earned the win in game one as she allowed one run on three hits with two strikeouts and a walk while Fessenden earned the save as she got the final two outs
  • Dolloff led the offense with three hits and drove in a run while seven other players recorded a hit in game one
  • Fessenden, who started at second base, Popko and Clegg each tallied a hit against the Cougars in the second game
  • Maeson Schlaud, a freshman, pitched well in relief in her collegiate debut as she allowed two hits over the final three innings with two strikeouts
JERRY'S WORLD
  • "We played a great first game with solid defense and clutch hits and Amy Clegg made a great play to end the game. She cut off a hard hit ball headed to the gap and made a great throw to third for the out. Madisen was great and Alyssa pitched well in the seventh. Against Saint Xavier we faced their ace and she hit her spots and kept us off balance the entire game. All in all in all it was a good day for us today." - Head Coach Jerry Abraham
