SYLVANIA, Ohio - For the second straight season, the top-seeded Madonna University softball team was knocked out of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference by the No. 5 seed, this time is was defending champion University of Northwestern Ohio who defeated the Crusaders 6-3 in eight innings in the tournament semifinal. Madonna won its first game of the day over Concordia University - Ann Arbor 3-2 at Pacesetter Park on Monday.
GAME 1: Madonna 3, Concordia 2
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- The Cardinals scored first with a pair of hits in the first inning and then took the lead in the sixth as a leadoff double came around to score.
- The Crusaders tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the third as Becky Giacobbi was hit by a pitch and scored four batters later on a two-out base hit by Halee Warren. In the sixth, MU again tied the score, this time getting an unearned run as Kerstyn Comerzan led off with a walk, moved to third on an error and scored on a Brooklyn Dolloff single.
- Dolloff scored the game-winning run as she scored on a sacrifice bunt and a pair of errors. Emma Sikinia laid down a great bunt, the ball was airmailed down the right field line and the Cardinals' catcher dropped the ball on a tag at home to give MU the 3-2 win.
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?
- The Blue and Gold were outhit 6-3 in the contest, but made just one error to Concordia's three.
- Kattie Popko, Warren and Dolloff each had a hit while MU drew four walks in the contest
- Alyssa Fessenden continued to excel in the circle as she moved to 6-0 on the season with two runs on six hits with on walk and a strikeout while Ciera Jones earned her fourth save of the year with a perfect inning.
GAME 2: Madonna 3, UNOH 6 (8 Innings)
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Madonna scored first in the bottom of the second as Amy Clegg doubled home Comerzan for the 1-0 lead
- A pair of Crusader errors led to a Racers run in the fourth, but the offense got the run back in the bottom of the frame. Clegg began the inning with a triple and scored on a Dolloff sacrifice fly. Giacobbi then singled, stole second and scored on a Sarah Holton single after the umpire called obstruction on a putout at the plate.
- UNOH tied the game in the sixth on a two-out, two-run double to right-center.
- The Racers used four more singles in the top of the eighth for the 6-3 win to advance to the WHAC Championship.
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?
- Both teams committed three errors and MU outhit UNOH 10-9, but MU failed to draw a walk, struck out three times and left nine runners on base
- Holton led the offense with three hits while Comerzan, Clegg and Giacobbi each had two
- Jones fell to 15-6 on the season as she allowed six runs, five earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts in 7.1 innings while Fessenden allowed one hit in her .2 innings
