TUCSON, Ariz. - The Madonna University softball team earned a pair of big victories on the fourth day of the Tucson Invitational Games at Lincoln Park - North Complex on Tuesday as they defeated No. 15 University of St. Francis (Ill.) 5-4 then gave NCAA III Baldwin Wallace University their first loss of the season, 4-3.
Jordan Johnson paced the offense with four hits on the day while Madisen Henry and Ciera Jone each went the distance in the wins.
GAME 1: Madonna 5, No. 15 Fighting Saints 4
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Madonna scored in each of the first four innings (2, 1, 1, 1,)
- A pair of errors brought in two MU runs in the first, Sarah Holton doubled in a run in the second, Brooklyn Dolloff singled in a tally in the third and Kattie Popko drove in the game-winning run in the fourth
- Two of the Fightings Saints runs were unearned and both game in the fourth. They also scored in the third and scored the fourth on a solo home run in the fifth
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?
- Becky Giacobbi conitnued to hit as she went 3-for-3 with a run scored while Holton and Jordan Johnson each collected a pair of hits in the 11-hit attack
- Johnson also scored twice while Popko drove in two
- Henry tossed a complete game and allowed four runs, two earned, on nine hits with one walk and eight strikeouts
GAME 2: Madonna 4, Yellow Jackets 3
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Madonna once again scored first as Popko plated Johnson with a groundout in the first
- Baldwin Wallace when up 3-1 with one run in each of the first, second and fourth innings
- The Crusaders tied the score on an error off the bat of Yogi Hang in the sixth as two unearned runs came across and Popko scored the game-winner in the seventh on a wild pitch
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY?
- MU was outhit in the contest 10-7
- Johnson, Halee Warren and Amy Clegg each had a pair of hits while Popko had the lone other
- Johnson, Popko, Clegg and Montana Spears each scored a run while Popko recorded MU's lone RBI
- Jones earned her sixth win of the season (6-1) as she allowed three runs on 10 hits with one walk and four strikeouts in a complete-game effort
