BRIGHTON, Mich. - The Madonna University softball team proved that offense should not be a problem this season as they outscored a pair of Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (NCAA Division III) programs 29-16 in the Legacy Opener on Friday afternoon.

The Crusader improved to 5-2 on the season with a pair of run-rule victories - 10-2 over SMC and 19-11 over OC. Madonna belted out 23 hits in the wins and the pitching and defense played well too.
Amy Clegg (4-for-6, 1 run, 4 RBI), Kerstyn Comerzan (3-for-3, 1 run, 3 RBI), Selena Deault (3-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and Montana Spears (3-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) powered the offense on the afternoon while Ciera Jones stood out in the circle as she allowed just one run on two hits with three strikeouts in four innings to earn her third win of the season.

GAME 1: Madonna 10, St. Mary's 2 (5 inn.)
  • It was all Madonna early and often as the Blue and Gold played three runs in the first as Jordan Johnson tripled in a run, Comeran doubled home one and Clegg singled in another for the early lead. A lead-off home run for the Belles cut the lead to two in the top o the second, but Clegg delivered in the bottom half with a two-out, two-run single to score two more.
  • The Crusaders netted three unearned runs in the third as a failed double-play scored two runs, Halee Warren singled in one and Comerzan doubled for a 9-1 lead. A Deault pinch-hit single scored the 10th run in the fourth then a two-out single for SMC off reliever Brooklyn Prescott accounted for the final tally.
GAME 2: Madonna 13, Lakers 4
  • Once again the Blue and Gold took advantage of sub-par defense from the opponent as four error and seven hits led to nine runs for MU in the first against the Comets. A bases loaded groundout, turned into an error and plated two runs and Comerzan followed with an RBI single. Clegg followed with a single to center that ended up scoring both runners and Clegg herself on an overthrow to make it 6-0. Emma Sikinia singled home two more and Kattie Popko, who scored earlier in the inning, drove in a run for the nine-run lead.
  • After Olivet got a run on two hits, the Crusaders got one each in the second and third innings as Sikinia plated another and Spears doubled in a run. A home run added to the OC tally, but things fell off the rails in the fifth.
  • Two errors, six walks and three hits led to eight Madonna runs in the fifth and pushed the lead to 17, 19-2. Kassidy Lipinski, Johnson, Jenna Gilbert, Emily Pawelski, Deault and Rebecca Barnes each recorded an RBI in the frame. The Crusaders' defense had some issues in the bottom half of the frame as three throwing errors and three home runs led to nine Comets' runs, but Madisen Henry shut the door with a pair of strikeouts to secure the run-rule win.

    • Sarah Holton, Johnson and Popko each scored twice while Comerzan (2-for-2, 2 RBI) and Clegg (2-for-3, 3 RBI) led the offense with two hits each
