Verant, Thomas lead #RV @MUCrusadersWSOC in victory over Cardinals

LIVONIA, Mich. - The Madonna University Women's Soccer team were in action today as they played host to Concordia University - Ann Arbor. The Crusaders were able to use a first-half goal from Megan Verant to take the 1-0 lead. The Crusaders now have a season-high six straight wins and now have a 7-1-1 record and 2-0 in the conference, while the Cardinals fall to 4-4 on the season and 1-1 in the conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Neither team was unable to score for most of the first half, despite multiple quality shots on goal for both teams.
  • Megan Verant broke the tie on a short free-kick from 5 yards out, after the Cardinal defense kicked the ball back to the goalie and picked the ball up. Jamie Moceri took the free kick and dumped it off to Verant who snuck the ball in near post for tha tally. The goal was Verant's sixth on the season.
  • The second half began the same as the first as neither team was able to get a shot into the back of the net.
  • Alex Thomas was solid in goal in her first start as she had three saves on the day.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • The Crusaders are now 32-3-1 all-time against the Cardinals and have won 17 out of the last 19 games
  • The Crusaders led in the shot column as they outshot the Cardinals 11-8 with also leading shot on goal with 5-3
  • Verant's goal today was her first game-winning goal on the season and the third of her career
  • Six total Crusaders tallied a shot in the contest
  • Alex Thomas recorded the first shutout of her career in her first start
