LIVONIA, Mich. - The Madonna University women's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season with a dominant 4-0 victory over Huntington University on Wednesday afternoon at the Madonna Athletics Complex. The Crusaders were led by a two-goal performance from Nicolette Vultaggio and a strong defensive performance by Julia Stewart in net.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
FIRST HALF
-
The Crusaders had no shortage of offensive opportunities in the first 45 minutes of play, although the Huntington keeper was up for the challenge, stopping all but one. Nicolette Vultaggio found herself with the first scoring chance of the game in the 11th minute but was not able to find the net as she missed wide left.
-
Audrey Kopitz was left open just outside the box off a great feed from Vultaggio but the freshman was not able to beat the diving keeper.
-
In the 33rd minute, another Vultaggio breakaway was broken up by the keeper and landed on the foot of Kirsten Schapman who was unable to sneak the ball past the scrambling HU keeper for another great save.
-
The Crusaders finally broke the tie in the 43rd minute off a beautiful shot from Megan Verant from 25 yards out that beat the keeper just inside the left post.
-
SECOND HALF
-
Vultaggio broke through early in the second half on back-to-back goals just 24 seconds apart, putting the Crusaders up by a score of 3-0. The first was a touch inside the near post after dribbling through the defense and the second was a nice one-touch shot past the keeper from a nice pass by Julia Henning.
-
In the 77th minute, Julieann White sent a perfectly placed cross inside the box where Kopitz was able to head it into the net for the final tally.
