@MUCrusadersWSOC races to history with 1-0 win over UNOH

LIMA, Ohio -  For the first time since 2008, the Madonna University women's soccer program will play for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament championship after a 1-0 win over top-seeded and 14th-ranked University of Northwestern Ohio at Racer Field on Saturday.

The shutout not only is the first ever win over UNOH in seven meetings for the Crusaders, but also ties the program record for shutouts in a season with 14. Madonna improves to 14-4-2 on the year and will face second-seed Aquinas College next weekend. UNOH, who owns the WHAC's regular season automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament falls to 13-4-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Crusaders plan to back the box and counter attack worked to perfection in the 54th minute. With the ball around midfield, Megan Verant intercepted a pass and played the feet of Jamie Moceri who dribbled to the top of the 18-yard box and sent a pass to Verant who buried the ball in the upper 90, far post, for what proved to be the game-winner.

INSIDE THE BOX

  • Julia Stewart was stellar in goal with nine saves as she faced 14 total shots

  • Nicolette Vultaggio paced the MU attack with three shots, two on frame while Moceri, Julia Henning and Verant each had a shot

  • The goal is the fourth of the year for Verant while Moceri's assist was also her fourth and gives her 24 points on the year

  • Madonna attempted eight shots and put five on frame

MILESTONES TO WATCH

  • Stewart (32) is one shutout shy of Jennifer Barker's (1998-01) 33

  • Stewart extended her single-season saves record to 14

  • The Crusaders tied the program's single-season shutout record of 14 set in 2000

PATTON'S PARLOR

  • "We went into the game with a plan and the players executed it perfectly. They held to the plan throughout, got the goal and grinded out the win. It was a great win for the players and our program. We are playing for a championship and you can't ask for much more than that." - Second year head coach Paul Patton

UP NEXT

  • The fourth-seeded Blue and Gold travel to Grand Rapids for the WHAC Championship game against second-seeded on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 5 p.m.

  • Madonna is seeking the program's fourth conference title and a trip to the NAIA National Tournament, both have not happened since 2005.
