LIVONIA, Mich.- The 20th-ranked Madonna University men's soccer team thrashed University of Michigan-Dearborn 5-0 in the opening round of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament. Madonna improved to 16-3-0 overall while UM-Dearborn end the season 6-10-2.

The Crusaders advance to the WHAC semi finals on Wednesday, Nov. 7 against fourth-seed Lawrence Tech.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • First Half

    • The Crusaders came out ready to play, earning a penalty in the second minute. Yuri Farkas Guglielmi stepped up and buried the game-winner into the bottom right corner of the net.

    • 13 minutes later Farkas netted his second goal off a good pass through by Wagner Gameiro Febbe, which Farkas took one touch and slipped past the goalkeeper.

    • Farkas completed the hat trick in the 42nd minute after he was awarded another penalty. He slotted the ball into the bottom right corner again for the third goal of the game.

  • Second Half

    • Madonna showed no signs of slowing down, and seven minutes into the second half Costa Wells got on the scorers list. Rodrigo Castro De Siqueira crossed the ball in from the left side, Wells chested it down to himself and struck the ball cooly into the top right corner for the fourth goal for the Crusaders.

    • In the 87th minute the Wolverines drew a PK of their own, but Michael Lubonja, who replaced the starting goalie Joe Smith in the 68th minute, made a great save on the shot to the bottom right to keep the clean sheet.

    • Farkas pounced on an opportunity with about 30 seconds left to score his fourth goal and the fifth for the Crusaders. Tavon Barnes played Farkas through on the right side which Farkas finished to the left corner for the final margin.

INSIDE THE BOX

  • Madonna topped the shot category with 23 shots compared to UM-Dearborn's three, and maintained the lead with shots on goal with 11 to their two.

  • Farkas led the Crusaders in shots with nine. Barnes followed him with four, and Wells and Marlon De Freitas both had two.

  • Farkas now sits at 23 goals on the season, while Costa Wells scored his second.

  • Smith and Lubonja shared the clean sheet, but Lubonja made the only two saves for the Crusaders.
